When Simeon held the eight-day-old fulfillment of the Messianic prophecy in his hands, he foretold, “Behold, this Child is destined for the fall and rising of many in Israel, and for a sign which will be spoken against … that the thoughts of many hearts may be revealed” (Luke 2:34-35). It’s easy to be a seeker until you come face-to-face with a new encounter of Jesus. We must ask: If Jesus stepped into our world today, how can we be sure He wouldn’t offend us terribly? A recognition of the Spirit’s lordship as utterly incompatible with our selfish objectives is key to cutting off every option but following God’s prompting.
